Merritt Island Karate, 1755 S. Tropical trail, 321-459-3000. In this photo Sensei Judy sits with 4 little girls in a circle to answer any questions, after a focused karate drill. The little girls age 6 through 8 are learning balance, focus and 6 basic karate techniques plus basic form number one. Every class is a major miles stone as they are able to observe, imitate and preform on their own karate skills that will stay with them. What’s wonderful about karate, in addition to the physical exercise, is the ability to organize data and develop eyes, ears and the space around us. One exercise that is really fun is being the “monkey” in the middle and with the eyes closed, pointing to a sound made by “monkeys” on the outside in the circle. Every karate school, even a classic style like Shorin-Ryu Karate needs kids to remember that games and laughter enrich us all!
