Meditation and Karate

  • shane med 2016Being grounded on the physical plane is essential to meditation. Sitting in the stillness calms the mind and can easily melt tension in the body. In karate, before and after every class we sit in meditation. For some of us, this is the best part of a class. Too often we never take the time to pause and just breathe and relax. (I remember a story from a former karate student, a family practice doctor. He told me that whenever he had to stitch someone up, he would retreat to his office and meditate first!)
  • After the star of class meditation, we do the warm ups and then push ups, followed by cross decks and then kata and finally we end with partner exercises.
    The class ends with a cool down of stretches and then once again sit in the stillness. From beginning to end, the entire workout is either a moving or a sitting meditation.
    The good news is: Anyone, not just Bruce Lee types, can do karate and enjoy the wonder of moving meditation. We don’t participate in tournaments. In our karate school the only person you compete with is yourself.
