Part 3: How are yoga and karate similar?
Shane- I think both yoga and karate are traditions. I think both are disciplines. Yoga is one of 6 philosophical systems in India. Yoga actually means union. The composer of the Yoga Sutras is Patanjali. One of the 8 limbs of the yoga philosophy is asana which mentions posture or seat. Only 2 or 3 of the 200 sutras in the Yoga Sutras mentions asana or posture, but this is from what yoga is practiced in the west is most common. Hatha yoga means sun/moon yoga or forceful yoga. The yoga system of Patanjali goes back from 2,500 years ago or so. Centuries latter certain groups focused more on asana or postures. There are many different types of asana based yoga in the USA and around the world. The roots of this can be traced with Krishnamacharya who was a South Indian whose students were Pattabhi Jois, BKS Iyengar, his son, and Indra Devi. My understanding is karate has it’s roots in India where it spread to China and was used to protect monks in self-defense from doing there meditation practices. Like yoga karate has many different forms from the slow moving Tai Chi to grappling to the traditional kata.
